With over 25 years of experience removing bees from homes, trees, odd containers, military bases, and commercial buildings, Keith has just about seen it all — and bees still find new places to surprise him.

From engineering student to beekeeper

Keith originally moved to Austin from Houston to earn an engineering degree. Having done beekeeping and bee removal with family friends, he began offering the service to help pay the bills. As removal requests took over his schedule, he made the leap — starting an apiary and launching Keith's Bee Service.

What 25 years of removals teaches you

The technical skill in this work is not the part most people expect. Suiting up and handling bees calmly is learnable in a season. Reading a building is what takes years. Keith can stand in front of a wall and narrow down where the comb sits from the entry point, the time of day the traffic peaks, the sound through the drywall, and the age of the construction — because he has opened that same wall design a hundred times across Austin and San Antonio. That is what keeps the opening small, and keeping the opening small is what protects the customer's house.

The engineering background shows up more than you would think. Every removal is a structural problem before it is a bee problem: what is load-bearing, where the wiring and plumbing run, how the section gets closed back up so the next swarm does not find the same gap. It is also why the apiary side matters — a relocated colony that does not survive is not really a relocation, so the bees are re-hived properly in Spicewood and managed afterward.
