Why Wasps Are Drawn to Austin Homes — and How to Keep Them Away

What attracts wasps to your home

Wasps look for two things: food and sheltered nesting spots. Central Texas offers both in abundance. Common draws include:

• Uncovered trash, recycling, and pet food
• Sugary drinks and fallen fruit near patios
• Untreated wood on decks, fences, and play sets (paper wasps chew it for nest material)
• Gaps in soffits, siding, and vents that make ideal sheltered cavities

Simple prevention that works

• Seal exterior gaps and cracks before spring swarming
• Keep trash bins closed and rinse recyclables
• Trim back vegetation touching the house
• Check eaves and ceilings early in the season for the first small nests

Know which wasp you are dealing with

Prevention differs by species, so it helps to identify what is actually building on your house. Paper wasps make the familiar open, umbrella-shaped comb hanging from a short stalk under eaves, patio covers, and play sets — you can see the cells from below. Red wasps are the larger, darker Central Texas cousin, same nest shape but a stronger defensive response. Yellow jackets are the ones that nest out of sight, often underground or inside a wall cavity, and they are far more likely to defend an area aggressively. Cicada killers are the enormous solitary wasps that alarm people every July and almost never sting; they dig individual burrows in bare soil and need no treatment at all in most yards.

Timing your prevention for Central Texas

The window that matters most is late winter into early spring. A queen starting a nest in March is working alone, and knocking down that first golf-ball-sized comb takes seconds. The same nest in July holds a defensive colony and is a job for someone in protective gear. So walk your eaves, porch ceilings, grill covers, and play sets in February and March, seal the soffit and siding gaps you find, and you avoid most of the summer problem outright.
